Links are simple, slash-separated strings which can be dynamically constructed and parsed in order to define and trigger behaviors. In practice they are quite similar to 'links' to custom URLs like in a web browser, hence the name.
Initially they were conceived as a sort of 'networkable' callback or lambda function. Since they are simple strings, they can be easily be serialized and deserialized.
